03 Jan Salon: The Marriage of Figaro
Love and lust, class and gender, intrigue, revenge, and forgiveness – Mozart’s comic opera The Marriage of Figaro weaves a bawdy but delightful tale via some of the most sublime music of all time. Join me on January 19th for a discussion of Figaro, featuring a presentation and performance by soprano Kimberly Soby, who has sung the role of Susana in this opera.
A teaser – some pop-culture use of one of the duets from Figaro.
Please RSVP here – feel free to invite friends, just make sure they sign up as well.
Salon Series is an intimate event series that explores classical music and opera through listening and discussion. Something like a hybrid between book club and house concert, this series is a project by musician, artist, and designer Rebecca White.
Soprano Kimberly Soby, hailed as “splendidly command[ing]” (South Florida Classical Review) and a “versatile [and] fearless performer” (Opera News), brings an exquisite balance of beauty and intelligence to her vast repertoire. Engagements for the 2018-19 season include returns as Gretel in Hansel and Gretel with Magic City Opera, Little Red Riding Hood in Seymour Barab’s Little Red Riding Hood for the Young Patronesses of the Opera In-School Opera Tour, soprano solos for Handel’s Messiah with New Presbyterian Concert Series and Saint-Saëns’ Christmas Oratorio with Spire Concert Series, and recitals throughout the greater Miami area with her ensemble, Tesserae Collective.
Ms. Soby holds dual Master’s degrees in Vocal Performance and Opera Studies from New England Conservatory and a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Connecticut. Originally from Connecticut, she now makes her home in Coral Gables, Florida with her precocious cats Molly McGee and Taco Larry Gato. Non-musical interests include the beach, tacos, and making messes in kitchens. She is currently reading her way through all of the Pulitzer Prize winning novels and is a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
